Samuel Moyer, top right, a furniture maker in Los Angeles,
has introduced the Hello collection, his first retail venture.
The one-of-a-kind pieces are all made with reclaimed wood,
some of it over 100 years old.
Priced from $1,200 to $4,800, the pieces share a lightness
that belies their sturdiness, and they seem to reflect Mr.
Moyer's meditative nature. "What makes me unique has a
lot to do with the way I think about the reclaimed material,"
said Mr. Moyer, who held onto one piece of black walnut for
seven years before turning it into the top of his Evening
sideboard, top left.
"You can read a story into it," he continued. "Like
with a photograph: we look at it and our minds will want to
recreate what's going on behind it. It's the same with a piece
of reclaimed wood." The Scarlett daybed, above left, has
a black walnut frame, white oak slats and a four-inch-thick
leather cushion (available in five colors). Mr. Moyer also
uses black walnut to make a shelf unit, above right, 89 inches
high and 67 inches wide, called Inside Out. Other woods are
available.
Mr. Moyer, 31, studied woodworking as a high school student
and architecture at Brown University. He once worked for a
company that rescued old buildings and moved them, piece by
piece, to new locations, and he has tapped some of those buildings
for his furniture. "I'm blessed and cursed, perhaps, to
have a very intimate connection with everything I make,"
he said. The Hello collection can be viewed at samuelmoyerfurniture.com
and ordered from there or from MediaNoche in Los Angeles,
1200 N. Alvarado St., (213) 353-4995.
